Which Ecobee is Best?
Let’s briefly go over the different models that Ecobee offers, so you will know which one you want to be on the lookout for when the prices plummet.
Ecobee SmartThermostat with voice control
Ecobee abandoned the numerical method of naming their latest ecobee by calling it just the Ecobee SmartThermostat. Don’t be fooled though, this is the latest (and best) ecobee to date. Some features it has over the ecobee 4 include: Alexa calling, bluetooth streaming, and 5.0 GHz WiFi support. If there’s a deal on this model, don’t hesitate to pick it up.
Ecobee4
The larger, heavier thermostat has a better touchscreen, and a few more features. It is fully back-compatible with all Ecobee3 sensors and devices. It will still work with Google Home, Apple HomeKit, Samsung SmartThings and IFTTT.
You won’t need an Amazon Alexa enabled device, though, as that has been built into the Ecobee4 system. There is a (sometimes annoying) LED light to indicate that Alexa is ready. The same Home and Away and Follow Me features of the Ecobee3 and Ecobee3 Lite are still there and the mobile app remains unchanged.
If you prefer the slightly higher cost that includes Amazon Alexa, the Ecobee4 is the way to go. It comes with a few upgrades, such as a speaker (to hear Alexa’s responses) and Far-Field Voice Recognition (so Alexa can hear you from down the hall).

Ecobee3
The Ecobee 3 has similarly been discontinued.
The Ecobee3 is an older model that still works very well in every home. The smart thermostat is voice control enabled and will work with Amazon Alexa, Google Home, Apple HomeKit, SmartThings and IFTTT.
You will get full HVAC control, including the use of humidifiers, dehumidifiers and ventilation systems. You will also receive up to three room sensors with your purchase (depending on the kit you buy).
Ecobee3 Lite
The Lite version is virtually identical to the Ecobee3. There are a few small physical differences (the corners are more rounded), but the main difference is the initial price. The Ecobee3 Lite is cheaper because it does not ship with any room sensors. You will need to buy those separate.
The Lite version also will not support extra HVAC controllers which include the humidifiers, dehumidifiers and ventilation systems. If you have these (or plan to), the Lite model will not work for you.

Room Sensors
You can purchase room sensors (in a kit of two) as a separate purchase. These room sensors work with all Ecobee smart thermostat models. They assist the thermostat in gathering the temperatures from around your entire home, instead of from a single point.
They are required to use the Follow Me feature, so you will need at least one room sensor to get all the benefits of the system.
Because the Ecobee3 Lite doesn’t come with any room sensors, these kits are a great purchase for those that already have the 3 Lite and want to extend the functionality of the thermostat.
Ecobee Switch Plus
The Switch+ is the latest release from the Ecobee stable. It isn’t a thermostat but a smart light switch. It has Amazon Alexa built in as well as proximity sensors to know when you are out of the room.
Using the Switch+ you can control your lights from the Ecobee mobile app, or allow the switch to recognize your movements when you walk into the room (or the home) and when you have been absent for a while.
The switch also pairs with the Ecobee thermostats as a room sensor. (As of this writing the feature is being rolled out. A firmware update is all that is needed.) You will be able to set schedules for your lights, get the weather, play music or have Alexa read you news and recipes.
If you have more than one Alexa enabled device, the Switch+ will only respond if it is the closest device to your voice.

When is Black Friday?
Black Friday traditionally falls on the Friday following Thanksgiving.
Though some retailers will actually start having “Black Friday” deals even before Thanksgivin.
The technical shopping day this year will be Friday, November 25th, 2022.
Cyber Monday falls on the Monday right after.
Ecobee will once again have some great deals for you on Black Friday and Cyber Monday. We will be tracking the deals and keeping you updated on the places and prices throughout the day and all of the weekend.
Black Friday isn’t just limited to large retail shops anymore, and it has been extended to multiple days over various platforms. So come on in and let us do the hard work for you. We will keep tabs on all the deals, so you know when and where to strike to get the best possible deal.

Ecobee Website
Ecobee has the Switch+ listed at $79
Ecobee is also offering free shipping when you purchase online through their site.
Best Buy
Best Buy is slowly rolling out the Black Friday ads this year. Unlike last year where they gave you everything on sale weeks in advance. This year they are extending their sales to start on Thanksgiving day where the stores will be open until 5 pm. The sales continue through the weekend in-store and end on Monday online.
The Ecobee systems have not yet been listed, but we will update when they are. The rumors from Best Buy officials seem to hint at a discount of $50 per item, except for the Switch Plus which will be discounted $20. We expect the Ecobee discounts to appear on Saturday, but this could change at any time.
Target
Target has not yet released what they are going to sell the Ecobee thermostats for, however, they promise a discount. At this time it appears as if the rumors are stating the Ecobee4 will sell for $50 off.
The Room Sensor pack is already listed on the Target Website with an “in-cart discount” that will save you $8.00 off the regular price. This is their standard clearance price which tells me that they will not be carrying the room sensor packs online anymore. Expect a larger discount during the event.
Walmart
Walmart is also very hush this year about their expected deals. The retail giant has started to unveil specials throughout the Black Friday and Cyber Monday event based on the time of day you shop. At the current time, there is no way to know when the Ecobee systems will be listed or what time they will go on sale.
As soon as the information is released, we will have it for you here. What we do know is they plan to have a discount for the Ecobee4 and the Ecobee3 Lite both saving $49. We don’t know if there will be a discount on the Room Sensors pack or not.
Amazon
Amazon will do their usual Black Friday weekend event, everything leading up to the Cyber Monday blow out.
If Amazon holds true to the last two years events, they will begin the Monday before Thanksgiving with sales and specials every 30 minutes. On Cyber Monday itself, there will be events that are released every half hour with limited quantities. When they will list the Ecobee systems is anyone’s guess, however, they already have some discounts posted.
Home Depot
Home Depot has stated that their Ecobee3 Lite and Ecobee4 will be listed at $49 off the regular price. However, they would not tell if this would be an all-day Black Friday price or part of their flash sales going on throughout the day. As soon as we know, we will update this page.
Lowes
Lowes is also offering the Ecobee4 and Ecobee3 Lite for about $50 lower than normal prices. It appears (though not yet confirmed) that this will be an all-day sale on Black Friday.
Other Retailers
Your local hardware stores and home improvement stores such as Ace, True Value and others may have specific listings for your area. Because these are franchise style stores, there is no way we can list or keep up with any timed sales through these type of stores.
If you are going to look locally, you can probably expect the same $49 discount on the thermostats and $10 or less on the Room Sensors. If you spot one on a national chain store such as Ace Hardware that is different, please inform us, and your fellow readers, using the comment section below and we will update this section.
What is Cyber Monday and Black Friday?
Black Friday is a major shopping holiday that started in the United States and has now spread to many other countries. This day is reserved for huge sales and deep discounts on virtually anything you can think to purchase, in every store across the country.
It extends into Small Business Saturday, where local businesses vie for your money on the weekend. The shopping sales end with Cyber Monday where online retailers have their deals for those that don’t want to battle the crowds.
What are the Best Black Friday Deals?
As our research continues to find the best Ecobee deals during the Black Friday and Cyber Monday event, so far it appears that the best deals will be on the thermostats.
You can expect at least a $49 reduction in the price of the Ecobee4 and the Ecobee3 Lite (also listed as Ecobee Lite 2.0). The Ecobee3 will be hit, or miss as not all retailers carry this model.
In the most likely situation, Amazon will have the best deals. The discount combination plus free shipping will most likely woo most of you that don’t go outside of your home to shop. The online shops will all have similar deals, but with Amazon Prime and other Amazon promotions, the best and most secure deals will most likely be found there.
Which Deal Do We Recommend?
The best deal is going to be on the Ecobee4. This is the best Ecobee smart thermostat to date and if you are in the market for a smart thermostat, it is the way to go.
The reason we choose the Ecobee4 as the best Black Friday deal is mainly for the price discounts, but also because of the availability.
While you may be tempted to go with the Ecobee3, it isn’t being sold everywhere anymore. With the Black Friday / Cyber Monday deals, you can get the Ecobee4 and a Room Sensor for the same price as the Ecobee3 was sold for originally. That’s a pretty good deal in our books.
If you are looking for a smart thermostat, be patient. Another couple weeks until the shopping event of the year takes place is going to be worth it for the amount of money you will be saving.
